Winners of Inaugural ASEAN Steel Architectural Awards Announced at Grand Event in Malaysia

The winners of the first BlueScope Steel Architectural Awards ASEAN were unveiled at a spectacular awards ceremony held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur. The program, hosted by NS BlueScope in collaboration with leading industry partners such as the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA), Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI), the University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City (UAH), Malaysia’s ACG Media Group, and AustCham Singapore, celebrates the most innovative and creative applications of steel in architectural design across the ASEAN region.

The awards spanned five categories, each highlighting exceptional design and sustainable steel innovation. Participants included firms from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, with 14 finalist projects shortlisted from national competitions. Judging criteria emphasized Design Excellence, Innovation, and Sustainability, focusing on how projects serve and uplift their local communities.

Winners of the 2024 BlueScope Steel Architectural Awards ASEAN:

1. Industrial:  The Industrial Foundry for Marine Vessels, by Ar. Naksit Wisetmora

2. Commercial: VanaVasa Resort, by M J Kanny Architect

 

3. Residential: LAAB is More, by Studio Sifah

4. Institutional and Others: Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman, by Razin Architects

5. Long Lasting Beauty of COLORBOND® steel: CIDB Convention Centre, by Arkiskape

The event was attended by around 150 esteemed guests, including industry leaders, architects, and dignitaries such as the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ms. Danielle Heinecke. During her address, she praised the beauty and community impact of the award-winning projects.

“This new awards program will shine a deserving spotlight on some of the greatest steel architectural triumphs of our region. As an industry leader in painted and coated steel solutions, we are proud that we contribute to the innovation of building industry and help enable those beautiful, well-designed projects that are genuinely forging our communities and advancing sustainability.” said Connell Zhang, Chief Executive of NS BlueScope & China.

The evening also featured a Panel Discussion with the program’s five expert judges: Ar. Asae Sukhyanga, Dr. Ar. Tan Loke Mun, Ar. Achmad D. Tardiyana, Ar. Richard Coulson, and Dr. Ar. Truong Thanh Hai. The panel shared insights into trends, challenges, and opportunities in steel-based architectural design, providing inspiration for the audience.

In addition, the showcase of 14 finalist project boards allowed attendees to explore the designs up close, fostering learning and sparking inspiration for future architectural endeavors.
