What’s your role and journey at NS BlueScope like?
I’ve always been interested in heavy industry from a young age and perhaps this is due to my uncle’s influence, who works in the heavy manufacturing industry at the Map Ta Phut industrial estate. I chose to study engineering at university because the idea of working on complex systems and leveraging technology to transform raw materials into finished products fascinates me.
I joined NS BlueScope Thailand in 2006 as an engineer in the product development team. Subsequently, I’ve had opportunities to rotate to various teams to be exposed to the world of heavy manufacturing. These include being a process engineer at the coated paint line (CPL); management of non-prime steel products, and utilizing technology to detect defects at the Quality department; and finally back at CPL to assume people management responsibilities and to oversee the entire production process.
What kind of growth opportunities have you been a part of at NS BlueScope?
One of my achievements is leading and implementing the Automatic Defect Camera system. This system consists of a camera and a processor, which automatically detects defect products. It can recognise the types of defects and classify them accordingly so that the relevant teams can follow up. This is a crucial quality check that is aimed at reducing human error, resulting in a more consistent steel output.
I encountered many challenges on this project. Firstly, we had to locate a space that allows the camera to be installed. We need sharp images to be captured and the system must be able to send signals back to the team when defects are detected. Due to space limitation, we had to modify parts of the building structure and the production line to accommodate the camera installation.
Next, the installation had to be completed quickly to avoid prolonged production downtime. We also did multiple tests and adjustments to ensure the system worked properly. Finally, we had to facilitate knowledge transfer and ensure employees from our production line knew how to operate the system and what to do when defects are detected.
I learnt so much leading this project and had a lot of fun working with colleagues from various departments. It made me appreciate the great teamwork and strong camaraderie when we work towards a common goal. It remains to-date one of my fondest memories of how I overcame challenges to deliver as promised.
How are you contributing to growth at NS BlueScope?
Personally, being dedicated to achieving excellence fuels my growth professionally. When a problem or issue presents itself at work, I see it as an opportunity to learn and grow together with my team. Leveraging on technology and digital methods to streamline production process, making it safe and easy for our people to operate, gives me immense satisfaction at work.
What does creating strength for the future mean to you?
A great advantage of working in NS BlueScope is that I belong to a local business while having access to a global network of industry experts as part of BlueScope Global. Learning alongside some of the best industry experts, and collaborating with colleagues across the region, help me to sharpen my skills and deepen my expertise in the steel industry.
NS BlueScope’s culture has been instrumental in my professional learning and development. People are empowered to learn at their own pace, based on their career aspirations and what they desire to become. Every learning opportunity is a chance for me to become a better people manager, and help others grow as I grow with the organization. I am excited to see where this journey of growth will take me next.
