What’s my role at NS BlueScope?

As a Combustion Technician, my job is to ensure that everything related to ovens, burners, furnace and coating pots including electrical, mechanical, refractory and instruments, are functioning at optimal levels. I play an important role in the production process to enable the business to deliver high quality products to our customers, while protecting our environment and the communities we operate in.

Why did you join NS BlueScope?

I joined the company as a Facilities Technician and transitioned into my current role as Combustion Technician in 2016.

I have a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and I joined NS BlueScope because it is a global company that allows me to build deep engineering skills and provides different career opportunities for employees who aspire to learn and grow professionally.

“Innovation is about finding new ways of manufacturing or delivering a better product. In the process, we make a positive impact in the communities we operate in through the high-quality products we deliver to meet customers’ needs.”
What does innovation mean to you personally or professionally either in your role or career?

To me, innovation is about finding new ways of manufacturing or delivering a better product.

My personal work ethic is to leverage work challenges as opportunities to increase my technical skills and knowledge. When I problem-solve at work, I gain new skills and keep myself up to date with the changes in technologies. In the process, we make a positive impact in the communities we operate in through the high-quality products we deliver to meet customers’ needs.

How are you contributing to innovation at NS BlueScope?

I am always on the lookout for the latest, most innovative ways, ideas or technologies to improve work efficiency, and most importantly, I take failures as learning opportunities and a reminder that I’m getting close to something better and more efficient.

I recalled when we introduced the Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO) a few years back, I modified the structure of the machinery, including the control system, in order for the machine to be able to fit nicely in the designated spot and allow the production process. to operate smoothly. It was a challenging situation as we could not stop the production and the RTO had to be in place as quickly as possible. This was a great learning experience for me and showed that I can work around the issue and deliver a great outcome for the business.

At work, I often encourage colleagues to share their challenges and ideas. By creating a culture where everyone’s views are important, we come up with a better solution and strengthen our camaraderie. Since I’ve been on the job for quite a few years, I also share my learnings and experiences with junior employees to speed up their learning curve and role model the importance of sharing knowledge and expertise with one another.

What do I look forward to do in the next couple of years?

NS BlueScope provides a good working environment for engineers like me to build deep technical skills and capabilities. My manager is supportive of my work and empowers me by giving me the room to try and fail and celebrating with me when I succeed!

I look forward to more opportunities to learn about the latest technology, sparring with engineers across the region and globally to create more efficient and value-add engineering feats at BlueScope.
