When I was an undergraduate at Monash University, I was involved in a project under the Engineers Without Borders Club. This was a profound project that provided building materials for dilapidated buildings occupied by the poor and neglected located in rural Rawang.

NS BlueScope came forward to sponsor my project and that was how I got to know about the company and how big the organization is on giving back to the community. Shortly after my graduation, I reached back to NSBS and joined as a Technical Marketing Engineer. A couple of years later, I took on the role of Key Account Manager, looking after domestic and export sales, driving sales growth and profitability for NS BlueScope Malaysia and since then there has been no looking back.

When I was in the role of a Technical Marketing Engineer, I looked at BlueScope’s product premium positioning. This included standardizing pre-sales presentation and coordinating site inspection services. Technical content can be difficult for any audience, so making this complex information simpler by weaving it through stories that people could resonate with was my end goal.

A highlight of my tenure that I fondly remember is leading the Steel Connect Webinars during the pandemic. Despite the limitations of virtual events, we managed to run engaging sessions with industry experts, fostering connections with architects, engineers, and developers. The topics shared at the webinars ranged from technical talks and featured architects who undertake unique projects using steel. This experience proved to me that every challenge is an opportunity to flex, stretch and grow. I often look back with pride on how we delivered results for the business during the challenging times of the pandemic.

I derive great satisfaction when I contribute meaningfully at work. With BlueScope’s digital transformation, I explored ways to change our processes to digital methods and encouraged my colleagues to do the same. One of the digital tools I developed was the Preliminary Warranty Request Form (PWRF) and Warranty Request Form (WRF). These digital forms helped to standardize and simplify the process of warranty request from direct and indirect customers, allowing us to provide good pre-sales and after-sales service to our customers in and outside of Malaysia, enhancing overall customer experience.

BlueScope empowers employees with self-directed learning through our learning platform. On demand and accessible on-the-go, our learning platform allows me to upskill in areas such as data analytics as well as soft skills. Across NS BlueScope, different functions and subject matter experts share content via this learning platforms, so we can learn from colleagues as well as from people all over the globe. Embracing lifelong learning has helped me to up my game professionally, while bringing tangible value to the business.

Employees’ effort and contribution to the business does not go unrecognised. I am thankful to be appreciated by leaders for the work that I do to strengthen Our Purpose – whether it is building relationships with customers to expand market share, or reinforcing our culture and adoption of best practices, I have been recognised by leaders every now and then for my contributions in making a difference to the company.

For me, the essence of Our Purpose lies in creating smart solutions in steel that actively contribute to our communities. This commitment to Our Purpose has not only motivated me at work, it has become a guiding principle in my professional journey at BlueScope, where every effort is an opportunity to make a positive impact on employees and the communities we serve.

I look forward to being part of new projects that add on to my professional growth and development. I want to be a positive influence and share how we can contribute meaningfully at work and at the same time, gain immense satisfaction by challenging ourselves to live out Our Purpose.
